Hydrolic Breake Fluids

The hydraulic braking system operates on the principle of transmitting brake pressure through a fluid. In the automotive industry, the fluid used for transmitting this pressure is referred to as Brake Fluid, Hydraulic Brake Fluid, or Brake Hydraulic Fluid.
Hydraulic brake fluids are classified according to DOT ratings. DOT is an abbreviation of the term "Department of Transportation." The required properties of hydraulic brake fluids, particularly their boiling points, have been standardized through DOT classifications. Brake fluids are differentiated based on their dry and wet boiling points.
- Brake fluids with a dry boiling point of 205°C and a wet boiling point of 140°C are classified as DOT 3;
- Brake fluids with a dry boiling point of 230°C and a wet boiling point of 155°C are classified as DOT 4;
- Brake fluids with a dry boiling point of 260°C and a wet boiling point of 180°C are classified as DOT 5;
- Brake fluids with a dry boiling point of 270°C and a wet boiling point of 190°C are classified as DOT 5.1.
There are also international specifications aligned with the above-mentioned DOT standards. All DOT standards comply with FMVSS 116 and ISO 4926 specifications. While DOT 3 fluids meet the requirements of SAE J 1703, DOT 4 fluids comply with SAE J 1704 specifications.
The abbreviations FMVSS, ISO, and SAE stand for:
FMVSS: Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards
ISO: International Organization for Standardization
SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers
One important consideration when using hydraulic brake fluids is their compatibility with one another. DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are polyglycol-based brake fluids. To ensure the expected braking performance and prevent unexpected failures, mixing fluids with different DOT classifications is not recommended. DOT 5, on the other hand, is a silicone-based hydraulic fluid and must never be mixed with other hydraulic brake fluids.
Features of Opet Hydraulic Brake Fluids
Opet Hydraulic Brake Fluids prevent corrosion of metal components within the braking system and are fully compatible with the plastic and rubber seals and gaskets used throughout the system. High temperatures are generated in braking systems due to friction between brake pads and the hydraulic pressure within the brake circuit. Opet Hydraulic Brake Fluids maintain their properties under these elevated temperatures, ensuring reliable and superior performance.
HBF DOT 3 is a synthetic hydraulic brake fluid formulated with polyethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol ether, and specially selected additives for use in the hydraulic braking systems of motor vehicles. Its high-performance formulation enables it to perform effectively even under the high temperatures generated by friction within braking systems.
Performance Levels: FMVSS 116 DOT 3; ISO 4925; SAE J 1703
HBF DOT 4 is an extra-performance synthetic hydraulic brake fluid formulated with polyethylene glycol, polyethylene glycol ether, and specially selected additives for use in the hydraulic braking systems of motor vehicles. It ensures safe operation by delivering efficient pressure transmission even under the high temperatures generated by friction within braking systems.
Performance Levels: FMVSS 116 DOT 4; ISO 4925; SAE J 1704/1703
